With inclement weather expected to roll through Cromwell, Connecticut, on Saturday, Round 3 action at the 2020 Travelers Championship will get an early start. Threesomes will begin going off split tees at 7:15 a.m. ET, with the final group of leaders going off hole No. 1 at 9:15 a.m.
Phil Mickelson is the solo leader in the final pairing through 36 holes after firing off a 7-under 63 on Friday and a 6-under 64 on Thursday. Hot on his trail are Will Gordon and Mackenzie Hughes, both of whom are one stroke back at 12 under through two rounds. Gordon posted a 62 on Friday that ties for the second-best round among all golfers in the field as we meet the halfway point of the event.
In the second tier of contenders chasing the featured trio of Mickelson, Gordon and Hughes leading into moving day is a batch of golfers sitting at 9 under: Xander Schauffele, Brendan Steele, Rory McIlroy, Brendon Todd and Marc Leishman.
As we enter the weekend, the health of the field still involved remains a storyline worth following. Cameron Champ and Nick Watney withdrew from the Travelers after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of Thursday’s start, and on Friday, our first in-action withdrawal of the weekend came as Denny McCarthy pulled out after he tested positive for the virus. The PGA Tour said no other golfers thus far have tested positive.
However, because of his own health concerns around COVID-19, Jason Day requested extra testing for himself and his caddie and will play as a single on Saturday morning. Day was paired with Kevin Kisner and Kevin Chappell over the first two rounds and the PGA Tour said this is a precautionary measure.
