Manchester City handed Chelsea its worst ever Premier League defeat on Sunday as a Sergio Aguero hat trick led Pep Guardiola’s team to a 6-0 win and back into first place. City had 15 shots, nine on frame, converting two-third of them in a game that left Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri embarrassed at the final whistle.

In addition to Aguero’s three, Raheem Sterling scored two and Ilkay Gundogan added another as the hosts led 4-0 after just 25 minutes.

Here are three takeaways from the match:

It was a complete, total knockout

This was City at its best and Chelsea at its worst. The Blues created a few chances but it didn’t really matter as the door was blown off this thing before it was a half-hour in. City was lethal from the get go and Chelsea was knocked out quickly. Sterling’s first goal in the fourth minute ended up being the winner. Take a look:

Then Aguero did this, going far post with a rocket effort that put the game away in the first half:

Look, there is no denying the scoreline. Chelsea was destroyed, and after losing 4-0 to Bournemouth a couple weeks back, the team suffers its worst loss in league history. It’s safe to say there is a hot seat for Sarri after this woeful showing.

Where does Chelsea go from here?

While this match isn’t the end of the world, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if it is the end of Sarri. Sure, Chelsea is in the League Cup final (against Manchester City), and still in the fight for the top four, but those two recent losses by a combined ten goals show that this team has a long way to go. The central defense needs work, David Luiz is no longer a quality defender and this is a game that could have quite the impact to the team’s morale the rest of the way.

While things could get worse, it’s hard to envision how, aside from simply not getting results. This was one of Chelsea’s worst performances in history.

Good news for Manchester United, not good for Liverpool

Manchester United is firmly in fourth place thanks to this loss by Chelsea, while Liverpool shifts back to second place following this result. With Chelsea’s struggles, this result may be the knockout punch for the top four for Sarri’s team if United can stay hot. For Liverpool, this shows that City isn’t backing down in the title fight with 12 games to go for the Reds and 11 for City.
